Did you know that it's no longer necessary to visit the dentist two times if you need a crown? When you choose a CEREC crown, you'll cereconly need one appointment. Our Winston-Salem, NC, dentist, Dr. Denise Perrotta, discuss the CEREC process.

CEREC crowns are created in our office

Porcelain and porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns must be crafted in dental laboratories. Because the laboratories serve dentists from all over the Winston-Salem area, it generally takes about two weeks from the time a tooth is prepared until you receive your crown.

In the interim, you'll wear a temporary crown that's much less durable than a permanent restoration. You'll have to floss very carefully and avoid hard, tough or sticky foods that can damage or dislodge your crown. You'll then have to miss another few hours out of your day to return to the dentist's office for your new crown.

The CEREC process offers a much convenient alternative. When you visit our office, we'll reduce the size of your tooth, then take a digital image of your mouth. If your past impressions have involved messy putty, you'll appreciate the digital method. Digital imaging only takes seconds, while putty impressions must remain in your mouth for about three minutes.

Normally, you'd go home and wait for your next appointment at this stage in the process. Instead, you'll remain in our office while we use the special CEREC software to design your new crown. Once this step is complete, we'll send the design to the milling machine in our office. The milling machine takes a block of resin or ceramic and removes layers to create your crown. The result is an attractive restoration that looks completely natural when attached to your tooth.

Once your CEREC crown is ready, the fit will be checked and adjustments made if necessary. Problems with crowns aren't common, but they can occur occasionally. If your porcelain crown doesn't fit properly, you'll spend another two weeks wearing a temporary crown. Should a fit issue occur with a CEREC crown, you'll only need to spend a little more time at the office while a new crown is produced.

CEREC crowns eliminate the wait. If you're interested in learning if a CEREC crown is a good choice for you, schedule an appointment with Winston-Salem, NC, dentist, Dr. Perrotta, by calling (336) 760-9258.
